Mastering Data Interpretation (DI): Caselet and Radar Graph High-Scoring Strategies

calendar_month November 8, 2026 | By EduSprint Faculty
Data interpretation, caselets, and radar spider graphs

Data Interpretation (DI) has moved beyond simple bar charts and pie graphs. In modern banking examinations, complex structures like Paragraph-based Caselets and Radar (Spider) Graphs dominate both the Preliminary and Mains phases. These formats are designed to test your ability to extract structured data from complex setups and process it with absolute precision. Here is how you can dismantle these high-scoring frameworks systematically.

Strategy Phase 1: Conquering Paragraph-Based Caselets

A Caselet presents data as a continuous block of text, resembling a reading comprehension passage for mathematics. The most common error is trying to solve individual questions by reading back through the text block over and over.

The Solution: The Master Matrix Table

Before looking at the questions, convert the entire text block into a clean, comprehensive data table:

CASELET DECODING MATRIX
Categories Department A Department B Total
Males [Value X] [Value Y] [X+Y]
Females [Value Z] [Value W] [Z+W]
Total [X+Z] [Y+W] [Grand]
  • Isolate the Variables: Identify the main categories (e.g., companies, departments, years) and use them to draw a fixed horizontal and vertical matrix grid.
  • Solve Step-by-Step: Move through the sentences one by one. Convert comparative percentages and ratios into absolute integer values, filing them into your matrix grid. If a value is missing, tag it with an algebraic variable (x or y) and link it to the next conditional equation sentence.

Strategy Phase 2: Mastering Radar (Spider-Web) Graphs

A Radar chart displays data across a concentric web of multi-directional grids. Candidates often lose points here simply due to visual misalignments.

(Value 50) / \ │ / \ (Value 40) / \ │ / \ ─────────┼───────*───────┼───────── (Concentric Grids) │ \ / (Value 20) \ / │ \ / \ /
  • Calibrate the Grid Scale: Your first step is to figure out the value of each individual ring. Look closely at two labeled reference lines (e.g., 20 and 30) and count the number of concentric spaces between them. If there are 5 spaces, each ring represents exactly 2 units.
  • Build an Intermediate Value List: Do not try to read data coordinates directly from the web for every separate question. Spend 40 seconds reading all data point intersections upfront and write them down as a neat list on your scratch pad.
  • Apply Fast Approximations: When dealing with multi-variable combinations, use average approximations and percentage shortcuts to clear the final calculations without getting bogged down in long-form division.
